Bangus Valley – Kashmir’s Untouched Paradise
Season: Both SUMMER & WINTER (best visited May–October; winters are harsh and access may be limited)
Overview:
At around 3,000 meters (9,842 ft) above sea level, Bangus Valley (from Kashmiri “Band-e-Gus” meaning “small grass”) is one of Kashmir’s least-explored destinations. Spread across 300 sq km in Kupwara district, it is divided into Boad Bangus (Big Bangus) and Qazinag/Badan Bangus (Small Bangus). Known for its vast grasslands, crystal-clear streams, and alpine forests, Bangus is often called the “next Gulmarg” for its tourism potential, though it remains delightfully raw and pristine.
How to Reach:
By Air: Srinagar International Airport (110 km / 4–5 hrs).
By Road: Accessible via Handwara and Kupwara towns. Route passes through picturesque villages and pine forests.
By Rail: Jammu Tawi (350 km) is the nearest major railhead.
